Position Description

The Transmission and Distribution Delivery department in ESB Engineering & Major Projects is the centre of engineering design and project delivery for ESB’s Transmission & Distribution deliverables, as well as providing consultancy services in T&D technology for external clients.

The 220/110kV AIS Stations Team is responsible for delivering AIS substation projects at 110 kV and above.

 

The Senior Team Leader, AIS Civil Team, 220 / 110 kV AIS Stations will lead a team of civil designers, quantity surveyors and CAD technicians to provide specialist design solutions,  in preparing and updating specifications, maintaining standards and expanding knowledge and understanding to deliver substations projects.

 

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the role are to:

 

  • Promote and lead the safety management culture across all activities by taking ownership and demonstrating visible commitment to safety.
  • Support overall management of Transmission and distribution delivery in line with the ESB Strategy.
  • Ensure that the requirements of the Construction Regulations (or the CDM processes where relevant) are adhered to within their team.
  • Engage with, influence and manage key internal and external stakeholders including contractors, developers, equipment suppliers, Eirgrid and other statutory bodies, ESB Procurement and our delivery partners.
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to team members in all aspects of project conception, technical scoping, costing, design, project programming and contract management.
  • Act as technical subject matter expert and key influencer for relevant Civil Engineering activities on HV transmission and distribution projects.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the Brighter Future Strategy and the ability to deliver on the HV transmission and distribution project targets therein.
  • Have a strong commercial awareness with accountability for delivering contracts of technical complexity.
  • Manage commercial risk on major civil engineering contracts.
  • Provide civil engineering input to project business cases to enable commercial delivery, while ensuring the management of technical risk for ESB.
  • Manage and co-ordinate all relevant Civil Engineering activities required to successfully deliver projects to approved scope, budget and programme.
  • Ability to define the performance targets, including financial performance, of team members and support and manage their performance to achieve targets.
  • Be accountable for the overall service and performance of the team and manage any matters that result from team performance / relationship issues.
  • Have ability to prioritise workload within the team and balance client expectations with available resources and project deadlines.
  • Have accountability for quality assurance and auditing of team deliverables including   work of external consultants and providing support and guidance on the implementation of Quality Procedures across TDD, E&MP and ESB.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential

The candidate must have:

  • A minimum of 7 years' relevant post qualification experience at least two of which must be in the delivery of civil engineering aspects of electrical transmission and distribution projects
  • The mix of technical expertise and people management skills to support the delivery on a portfolio of HV transmission and distribution projects for ESB Networks.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of PSDP process and Construction Regulations
  • Strong communications skills with the ability to communicate influence and negotiate with internal stakeholders across ESB and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated record of successfully managing significant projects or key aspects of significant projects.
  • The ability to lead and direct a multi-disciplinary team having diverse technical disciplines.   
  • Strong commercial awareness with clear understanding of commercial risks involved.
  • Accountability for delivering contracts of high technical complexity.
  • Critical thinking skills and judgement required to ensure significant civil risks are successfully identified and managed on major projects thus mitigating against financial implications and penalties.
  • A strong ability to identify project work requirements and to initiate necessary work with limited oversight.
     

Desirable

  • Team management experience.
  • Experience in the use of FIDIC Conditions of Contract, including EPC, D&B Contracting and Multi Direct Contracting of large projects.
  • Experience in performing PSDP/PD role on projects.
  • Full driving licence and access to a car.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Essential

  • Level 8 Engineering Degree or equivalent qualification.

 

Location

The position will be based in One Dublin Airport Central office.  Regular travel to ESB locations countywide is a feature of this position.

The successful candidate may combine working from home within the Republic of Ireland, with attendance at base for in-person collaboration, the frequency of which is agreed with the manager and may change as we learn about hybrid working
