Senior OHL Design Engineer
The Transmission and Distribution Delivery (TDD) department works closely with ESB Networks, Eirgrid, and external contracting partners to deliver engineering, technical, and innovative solutions that are safe, sustainable, and commercially optimised in alignment with ESB's Net Zero by 2040 Strategy.
The successful candidate will work in the Overhead Line Design (OHLD) group as the Lead Engineer, responsible for delivering designs and fulfilling the PSDP function on a wide range of OHL transmission projects. This role also involves managing the ESB OHL transmission material portfolio, developing overhead line standards, material design development and analysis, developing OHL material specifications, conducting tender evaluations and factory quality inspections, and managing material term contracts.
Key Responsibilities
The key responsibility of the role is to provide high quality designs and safety coordination on a diverse range of electricity transmission development projects. This includes:
- Provide overall leadership for delivery of High Voltage specialist design for overhead lines from 38 kV to 400 kV. This will include detailed structural analysis, foundation design, specialist design studies and design/management of technical requirements for procurement of new OHL structures.
- Provide technical guidance to team members in all aspects of the design, construction, test and inspection, training, development, mentoring and interfacing with clients.
- Deliver competitive project proposals and lead the negotiation and management of contracts with external clients.
- Lead the training and development of junior staff within the OHL design group.
- Manage relevant internal and external stakeholders, driving the OHL group’s overall development and expertise in OHL Design, including documentation of internal and external training and quality procedures.
- Representing OHL Design Group, ESBI and ESB group as subject matter expert where required.
- Develop and implement plans to improve and standardise the processes for bid work and external clients.
- Engage in continuous professional development to expand knowledge and understanding of OHL design which is demonstrated in decision making and understanding by producing efficient and technically sound designs.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
The successful candidate will ideally have several of the qualities listed below:
- A minimum of five years’ experience in overhead line design.
- Either a third level qualification or equivalent work experience is essential.
- A strong understanding of all elements of overhead line design.
- Proficient in the use of PLS Software.
- A strong work ethic with a clear focus on delivery to ESB’s safety, time, quality, and cost objectives.
- Strong commercial and project management capability.
- The demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
- A flexible approach to work, especially where necessary to delivery excellent customer service.
- Excellent communication skills.
- A proven track record of success contributing to the training and development of technical professionals.
- Full driving licence
Desirable
- PSDP Competency HV1/ HV2 (or CDMC equivalent).
- Site work competency DL 2
Location
ESB EMP Dublin and Cork office but travel to project locations as required, is a key requirement of the role.

€57,000 to €68,000
