Position Description


The HV Substation Commissioning & SCS Team in Transmission & Distribution Delivery provides a highly technical commissioning service for both domestic and foreign clients. This involves the verification that the HV Substation equipment is in a satisfactory state so that a declaration of fitness certificate may be issued to the System Controller confirming that the equipment is fit for connection to the relevant HV system.



Key Responsibilities


Responsibilities will cover the items below:


Working on a national basis, at times largely dictated by operational constraints, key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Assessment of site safety prior to engaging in commissioning activities and to coordinate the work schedule with site staff as appropriate.
  • Commissioning primary, secondary and associated equipment forming part of Transmission / Distribution Networks.
  • Commissioning testing of instrument transformers, power transformers and HV switchgear.
  • Commissioning testing of protection relays.
  • Functional verification of protection scheme designs and checking compliance to approved design standards.
  • Coordinate, plan, and deliver commissioning projects.



Knowledge, Skills and Experience



  • Knowledge and experience of Electrical Safety Rules and procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience of operational procedures and the operation of substations.
  • Familiarity with typical protection philosophies as applied to Transmission and Distribution Networks.
  • Conceptual understanding of the design and operating mechanism of Power Plant;
  • Thorough knowledge of schematics, cubicle wiring and functional testing techniques.
  • Self-motivated and be capable of working on their own initiative without direct supervision.
  • Work well with other team members and actively participate in achieving the team’s targets.
  • Ability to work and share knowledge and competencies within a team structure.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Organise, plan and monitor all aspects of the work.
  • Have a logical, yet imaginative approach to problem solving.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make quality decisions and judgments.
  • Show a high level of commitment and flexibility.
  • Maintain a strong safety focus and actively drive the EMP safety culture within the team and other related areas of ESB/ESBI.
  • As travelling to sites is feature of this role, it is essential to have appropriate Drivers License.
  • A minimum of 3 years relevant experience in the High Voltage Transmission and Distribution industry.






  • Either a 3rd Level qualification or equivalent work experience is essential.
  • A minimum of 3 years relevant experience in the High Voltage Transmission and Distribution industry.





The role will be based at the Engineering & Major Projects head office, One Dublin Airport Central. Actual deployment will be on either of the three Commissioning teams based in Dublin, North or South.  Site work throughout Ireland and internationally will be a feature in this role. Driver’s license is a must to apply for this role.



Reporting to


The successful candidate will report to the appropriate substation Commissioning Team Leader, Transmission & Distribution Delivery.





€40,000 to €50,000 per annum
