Our ESB Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2021–2025 sets out our clear commitment to an enduring continuous improvement in road safety. Our goal is for everyone in ESB to be role models for safe and responsible driving in Ireland. The Manager will be responsible for continuing to embed excellent work-related road safety behaviours in staff across all of ESB and contractors. Also, in recognising the significant role ESB plays as a leading best practice employer in road safety, the Manager will also continue to support the National Road Safety agenda by extending road safety to the families of staff and the wider community and working with our national stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver implement the objectives as set out in the ESB Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2021-2025
- Develop and implement a new ESB Road Safety Strategy 2026-2030 & Action Plan aimed at:
- Reducing the number of Road Traffic Incidents, Lost Time Incidents and P1’s to our total workforce
- Collaborating and engaging with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that their driving safety is managed through consistent implementation of standards and procedures.
- Setting measurable KPI metrics and monitoring progress to ensure the effectiveness of the strategy and action plan.
- Developing risk-based programmes and initiatives to address identified road safety challenges.
- Continuously reviewing and updating the strategy to adapt to emerging road safety risks / changes in legislation.
- Manage and coordinate the Road Safety Bureau team and align objectives and targets in line with the current / new Road Safety Strategy. Support the ongoing development and performance of the team.
- Manage the road safety programme, including engagement with all internal stakeholders (Programme Sponsor, Group Safety Manager, Steering Group, Operational Groups, Fleet and Equipment, Business Performance, Road Safety Champions and Road Safety Bureau) to achieve the objectives of the Road Safety programmeprogramme.
- Address road safety action areas around compliance, competence and engagement with management and staff throughout ESB
- Provide clear, concise, and timely information to the business to enable risk to be managed within the business line
- Utilise the Fleet Management System to identify risk-based issues and further develop programmes to address unsafe driving behaviours
- Further develop our “Campaign to Reduce Speed” to further reduce risk
- Develop and manage risk-based programmes through information, education, coaching, training, improvement plans and risk reduction control measures
- Engage all ESB staff to ensure that their driving safety is managed through consistent implementation of Company Standards and Procedures
- Develop risk-based road safety training programmes
- Develop educational and awareness campaigns to promote “Road Safetysafely sharing the road” considering drivers and vulnerable road users including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists
- Promote shared learning and road safety through good behaviour recognition (Good Driver Awards, Tidy Vehicle etc.) and annual road safety awards and events
- Engage with the business on road safety risks through monthly briefings, road safety articles, presentations and create opportunities for open two-way conversationsconversations.
- Engage, maintain, and further build relationships with the Emergency Services An Garda Síochána (Roads Policing Unit), Local and European Regulatory stakeholders the Road Safety Authority, the Heath and Safety Authority and the European Transport Safety Council as well as other national and international bodies or industries
- Benchmark our programmes against industry best practice with other companies and organisations
- Arrange the annual cross-industry Road Safety Forum in conjunction with other stakeholders
- Monitor data from various systems including SHIELD / Synergy Life and the Fleet Management System and carry out trends and analysis to identify patterns of risk and implement control measures
- Support the reduction of LTIs, P1s and the delivery of the Road Safety KPIs
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Either a 3rd Level qualification or equivalent work experience is essential.
- Full clean drivers licence.
- Experience managing performance through people
- Ability to motivate, lead and develop teams to raise performance levels
- Strong commitment to and understanding of Safe & Sound principles & ethos, culture transformation, leadership development & coaching
- Strong stakeholder management & influencing skills
- Demonstrated commitment to effective safety leadership
- Excellent communication & interpersonal skills and the ability to engage effectively with direct reports, managers at all levels, staff and third parties
- Strong problem solving & decision-making skills
- Self-motivation, resilience and flexibility to work in ambiguous environments and situations
- Excellent facilitator & presentation skills
- 7 years relevant experience
Desirable
- Change management & project management skills
- Good knowledge of the Networks business
- Experience in a health, safety or well-being capacity
- Experience and knowledge of key safety systems & processes, such as SHIELD, Risk Assessments, etc
- Good IT & analytical skills
Location
Flexible subject to agreement by Senior Safety, Health and Wellbeing Manager, however, travel will be required from time to time to various locations nationally for stakeholder and programme management.

Salary
Starting from €69,500 per annum
