Position Description 

The Network Designer (Engineering Officer) is responsible for providing safe network designs within your discipline. These design packs will be used by ESB Networks staff and/or contractors as per Work Programs to carry out work safely on the Electricity Network. The designs shall be carried out in line with relevant standards set down by ESB Network Assets and adhering to Company Standards. Depending upon the specific role assignment this design work can be related to domestic, commercial and industrial new or increased customer connections. In addition, the design work may be associated with the Capital Work Programmes including line design from LV to 38kV and underground design. 

All design work is required to be completed in a timely manner and in line with the ESB design standards & guidelines and ensuring that ESB Networks Customer Charter standards are adhered to. The role includes managing your own design workload. The successful candidate will have the ability to work on his / her own initiative but also as part of a larger design team and will be required to follow schedules set down by their design manager. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Preparing high quality designs; calculating costs; preparing capital approvals, work authorisations, protection settings, design drawings; measuring design clearances, for 38kV, MV, and LV networks, including use of all associated IT systems 

  • Preparing Scopes of work, costing templates and safety documentation 

  • Recording and updating the Distribution Network on the relevant IT systems 

  • Maintaining commercial focus by preparing least cost technically acceptable designs 

  • Liaising and negotiating with Local Authorities, landowners and other parties to obtain routes for underground cables and overhead lines in accordance with legislation and ESB policies 

  • Compliance with legislation and ESB Policy in relation to obtaining consent from landowners including issuing wayleaves 

  • Arranging cable easements and forestry easements and arranging road opening and closure licences where required. Applying for and processing Road Opening Licences 

  • Following ESB’s Code of Ethics “Our Code” 

  • Processing Site Acquisition and Planning Permission applications as required 

  • Manage own design workload as agreed with the relevant Design Manager 

  • Delivering an excellent customer service in line with ESB Networks Customer Charter 

  • Participating in the correlation and scheduling of construction work 

  • Compliance with Health & Safety Legislation and Environmental Legislation 

  • Fulfil the role of Designer under the Construction Regulations 

  • Gaining and maintaining an excellent knowledge of HV / MV / LV Electrical Networks depending on specific area of work and expertise 

  • Providing support in the planning and execution of construction and maintenance work programmes as required 

  • Use of IT systems such as SAP IWM, EPlan, SAP FMIS, Excel etc 

 

Experience and Qualifications

Essential 

  • Advanced Level 6 Electrical Craft Certificate/A suitable Level 7 or higher qualification in Electrical, Electrical Services, Electronics, Mechanical or other suitable alternative qualification with a sizeable electrical theory content. 
  • A full clean driving licence
  • Ability to translate scope and policy requirements into constructable designs 
  • Ability to Implement standards and policies to ensure optimum design
  • Knowledge of ESB network assets; Substations, Lines, Cables, Protection and Metering
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience 

 

Desirable 

  • Knowledge of ESB IT systems  

  • Understands and applies the relevant approved Quality Management standards in ESB Networks 

  • Project Management skills 

 

Locations 

 

These positions will be based in Dublin Central

Reporting to 

 

The successful candidate will report to the relevant Design Manager, Delivery Assurance, Network Customer & Project Delivery.

Salary

 

€48,000 to €6,000 per annum
