Position Description

 

 

The Liffey and Turlough Hill stations are made up of 4 separate generating locations; 292MW of pumped storage at Turlough Hill and 38MW of hydro generation at Poulaphuca, Golden Falls and Leixlip dams.  The civil infrastructure included in this portfolio includes three Category A concrete dams, a Category A embankment dam, tunnels, bridges, reservoirs, buildings, lands and civil structures associated with the River Liffey Hydroelectric Scheme and Turlough Hill.  Monitoring and maintaining the dams and civil infrastructure is the key focus of the Civil Engineering team.

 

The Hydro Team Member, Civil Technical Services Engineer will be reporting to the Civil Engineering Manager / Supervising Engineer and working as part of the Civil Engineering team based in Turlough Hill and the Liffey Stations. The position typically is to work with the civil works team but from time to time also with others in technical services, operations & maintenance. The successful candidate will be required to work across all functional areas within the stations and lands throughout the scheme for station projects.

 

The successful candidate will be required to work across all functional areas within the station including maintenance, operations control room, technical services, civil, supervision and contractor management.  The successful candidate will be required to work to the level of their competence to carry out their duties. Duties include project management, maintaining dam safety, water and people management, stakeholder liaison and contractor management. This role is a great opportunity to contribute to the landmark Turlough Hill and Liffey schemes, bringing and developing engineering expertise as part of a strong Civil Engineering team. 

 

The successful candidate should be a motivated team player with good problem-solving skills. They will be supported to work autonomously, to be flexible and to provide support to other teams and projects as required.  

 

Excellent communication skills are required and the ability to support and work effectively with staff at all levels within and outside of the organisation is essential. The successful candidate will receive training as required.    

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

 

The key responsibilities include the following:  

 

  • Provision of technical services to the Civil Engineering Manager / Supervising Engineer and the station team. 
  • Delivery of work across all areas of the stations, including maintenance, operations control room, civil, technical and support functions.
  • Managing Civil and Dam Safety Projects and completing reports on works carried out
  • Conducting Civil Inspections and completing reports on same 
  • Creating specifications, tendering and procurement for projects  
  • Managing projects from design through to delivery and completion
  • Maintaining the Civil and Environmental departments project folders and SharePoint sites
  • Working with the Civil Engineering Manager / Supervising Engineer to maintain all civil assets in good working condition and scheduling and overseeing maintenance as required
  • Supporting the Civil Engineering Manager / Supervising Engineer to ensure that dam instrumentation readings are taken, validated, and reviewed as scheduled and escalating as required
  • Providing expertise and support to other personnel carrying out instrumentation readings throughout the Turlough Hill and Liffey schemes
  • Interpreting and Monitoring Dam Behaviour and maintaining dam instrumentation
  • Providing cover for the Civil Engineering Manager / Supervising Engineer during periods of leave
  • Maintenance of the lands and infrastructure at Turlough Hill, the Liffey Stations and Pollaphuca Reservoir as required
  • Stakeholder liaison or other duties as required which may be assigned to you, from time to time, by your line manager

 

Experience and Qualifications

 

Essential

 

  • 5 years relevant experience in civil engineering, construction, surveying or equivalent
  • The Candidate must have a qualification at NFQ Level 8 Civil Engineering Degree or equivalent qualification 
  • Strong technical capability in civil and structural engineering design and competence to deliver civil/structural engineering packages
  • Demonstrated a record of successfully managing significant projects or aspects of significant projects
  • Attention to detail, good written and verbal communication skills, including report and specification writing
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities
  • Full clean driving licence and access to a vehicle

 

Desirable

 

 

  • Experience in Dams / Dams Monitoring  
  • Preparing manual calculations as well as an ability to use software packages
  • Preparation of design drawings and review of drawings prepared by others
  • Experience in the use of Eurocodes
  • Experience in performing PSDP role on projects
  • Knowledge of Safe Systems of work, permitting and isolating processes 
  • Experience in safety/ quality/environmental and site management of contractors 
  • Knowledge or experience of engineering/ document management systems  

 

Location

 

 

The successful candidate will be based in the most suitable Liffey Station or in Turlough Hill but will be expected to visit all stations on an ongoing basis.

 

Reporting To

 

 

The successful candidate will report to the Civil Engineering Manager / Supervising Engineer, Turlough Hill and Liffey Stations.

Salary

 

€59,980 - €70,564
