The Senior Civil Engineer will play a key role in the delivery of HV cables projects for ESB. This role involves close collaboration with design teams, ESB partners, and Contractors to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead early-stage design delivery for infrastructure projects, acting as lead designer within multidisciplinary project teams from feasibility through FEED and detailed design handover.
• Provide specialist civil engineering input to feasibility studies, optioneering, route and site selection, constructability, interfaces and cost / schedule decisions.
• Apply construction knowledge to early design decisions, identifying constraints, risks and opportunities before they affect consenting, procurement or construction
• Lead stakeholder engagement through early lifecycle stages and governance gates, ensuring key technical, safety, environmental, land and delivery risks are understood and addressed.
• Manage engineering work packages including scoping, procurement support, technical evaluations, consultant oversight and construction-phase input where required.
• Lead design reviews covering constructability, compliance with ESB standards and contract requirements, safety-in-design, risk management and whole-life asset considerations.
• Mentor junior engineers and promote a high-performing, knowledge-sharing design culture with a strong focus on early-stage design judgement and practical delivery outcomes.
• Promote and maintain a strong safety culture, ensuring safety is embedded in early design decisions and throughout project development and delivery.

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

The successful candidate will ideally have several of the qualities listed below:

• Level 8 Engineering Degree or equivalent.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant civil engineering experience.
• Specialist expertise and strong technical capability in civil engineering.
• Proven ability to manage significant projects or key aspects of projects.
• Strong communication and project management skills.
• Strong safety awareness and communication skills.
• Valid driver's license for ROI, access to a car, and flexibility to travel nationwide.

Desirable

It is desirable that the candidate has achieved the following:

• Chartered status or working towards it in a recognised professional institution.
• Experience in utility projects.
• Familiarity with FIDIC Conditions of Contract or similar.
• Experience in performing the role of designer and / or PSDP on projects.

Location

This role is based in ESB EMP office in either, The Sidings Building, Dublin 2 or East Gate, Cork but travel to project locations as required, is a key requirement of the role.

The successful candidate may work flexibly within their jurisdiction with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration on at least two days per week. All smart working arrangements are subject to manager approval and ongoing review, based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the individual.
