Hydro Team Member, Turlough Hill & Liffey Stations
Position Description
A vacancy exists for the position of Hydro Team Member, Turlough Hill & Liffey Generating Stations. The Liffey and Turlough Hill Stations are made up of 4 landmark renewable generating stations. Turlough Hill is a pumped storage station and the Liffey scheme comprises three hydro generation stations at Pollaphuca, Golden Falls and Leixlip dams. Pollaphuca reservoir also provides the vast majority of the water supply to the greater Dublin area. The other civil infrastructure in this portfolio includes tunnels, bridges, reservoirs, buildings, lands and associated civil structures. Pollaphuca Reservoir supplies the Liffey scheme, has a perimeter of approximately 60 km and is used for electricity generation, drinking water supply, walking trails and licensed activities.
The Hydro Team Member will work autonomously, be flexible and be a self-starter, providing support across all functional areas within the stations including supervision and contractor management and will work to the level of their competence to carry out their duties. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others is required. The successful candidate will give and receive training as defined by station management to attain and maintain competencies. Initially the successful candidate will fulfil the duties of the Reservoir Warden as part of the station team.
The Reservoir Wardens liaise with many community groups and clubs, interacting with the general public on a daily basis and engaging with statutory organisations and private landowners on reservoir activities. The successful candidate will ensure that ESB’s interests are maintained and will continually present a positive image of ESB to the public. The Reservoir Warden is required to use a boat and a jeep to carry out their work and lone working is required frequently.
The Reservoir Warden is predominately based at Pollaphuca Power Station with duties involving travelling across the Liffey Catchment. The duties will require full time weekend and bank holiday work between March and September. The Hydro Team Member will work in a dynamic environment and to meet the business needs the successful candidate will be required on occasions to have flexible working hours including weekend and night working and be available for call-outs. The role will include evening, weekend and Bank Holiday work. Lake warden patrol is full time during the summer months and will be rostered.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required to carry out a range of duties not limited to the following:
- Delivery of work across all areas of the station, including maintenance, operations, civil works, technical and support functions.
- Working safely, flexibly and to competence, as part of the overall team.
- Attain and retain competence in powerboat training, immersion training and trailer towing
- Presenting a positive image of ESB to the public
- Engaging with the public when on ESB lands to ensure that ESB’s safety policies are observed and that ESB’s occupier’s liability obligations are delivered
- Meeting with other public bodies, emergency response agencies and community groups as necessary
- Keeping a record of all issues involving third parties affecting ESB Liffey and Turlough Hill land
- Checking and ensuring all activity permits are valid
- Responding to plant alarms and indications
- Checking of and recording plant and dam instrumentation readings in ESB IT systems
- Carry out authorized roles under the safety rules as required (Safe Systems of Work)
Experience and Qualifications
The successful candidate will be self-motivated and required to work as part of a close team in a Generating Station environment, interacting effectively with other station staff and contractors as necessary.
Essential
- Strong interpersonal skills

- Boating experience at any level
- Competent Swimmer and capable of working on water
- Full, clean B category driving licence
- Applicants should be proficient in the use of computer systems
- Ability to be on site at Pollaphuca and Leixlip stations within 60 minutes
Desirable
- Dealing with public safety
- Clean BE category driving licence
- Powerboat training (level 2)
- Immersion course training
- Security experience
Location
The position is based on Turlough Hill and Liffey Generating Stations and the Liffey catchment, predominately at Pollaphuca.
Reporting to
Civil Works Supervisor, Turlough Hill and Liffey Generating Stations.

Salary
€33,950 - €40,204 per annum
